Radwanski's Ramblings...

I bow before Marni's expansive knowledge of whale-hop

Things got weird on Across the Board yesterday (that’s the Post’s editorial board blog, but you already knew that, right?). East Coast whales tangling with West Coast whales, and the whole sordid business.

I figure about 2% of readers had any idea what the hell we were talking about, but I’m counting on the young, pop culture-savvy crowd that hangs around here to get it. Anyway, the bad news is that I think Marni might’ve schooled me. The good news is I now have a name for my fantasy football team: Bullet in Your Blowhole.

Last Libertines post for at least 2 weeks...I promise

On a slightly more serious note, the Libertines’ new disc is now on shelves. Go buy it. And if you’re in Toronto, buy tickets for their Opera House gig next month and pray that Pete Doherty gets it together before then.

Remember back during Britpop, when that whole swingin’ London thing kinda made you wish you were in the U.K.? No? Well it made me feel that way, and now these guys make me feel that way again, but for entirely different reasons that I can’t quite explain.

Remember when you thought our politics were getting ugly?

Whatever you may think about John Kerry's war record, and personally I'd just as soon never hear another word about it, Citizenthis is in horrible taste. I don't care how much Kerry bled for his purple hearts; lots of veterans bled a whole lot, which makes this a really bad topic for humour.

Don't shoot the messenger

You know what? Ralph Klein’s acting like a jerk about this whole premiers conference skip-out, just like he’s been acting like a jerk on a lot of things lately. Know what else? Albertans know it: Virtually every erstwhile Klein supporter I’ve spoken to acknowledges that he’s well past his best-before date. And yet, some of them are gonna be pissed when they see this; all it takes is one know-it-all Ontarian to get folks rallying around Ralph.

Of course, rather than getting mad at me, they might want to blame their guy for turning into a carbon copy of his former sparring partner. You can't deny it - aside from being more brazenly arrogant, more blatantly unambitious, and a whole lot harder to get rid of, he’s starting to look an awful lot like Jean Chrétien. Now there’s a thought to warm the heart of every self-respecting Albertan.

Is it safe to turn on the TV again?

If you’re already getting nostalgic for the Olympics, you’re probably not going to want to read my recent Citizen column. But if you’re getting nostalgic for Olympic-bashing, this baby’ll be right up your alley.

Back to life...back to reality

Back from hiatus, well-rested and slightly tanned. Okay, not really very tanned at all, but this is what happens when you’re of a rather pasty pigmentation. Still, a metaphorical tan is better than none at all.

A bit of a personal update to get things going again…for those who keep close track of such things, this week will mark my final Citizen column. From now on, I’ll be writing weekly columns for the Post - half with an Ontario focus, and half with a national one. On top of the usual writing/editing/etc., this’ll keep me busier than ever.

Almost two years to the day from when I started my Citizen stuff, I’m obliged to give a quick shout-out to the very kind folks who gave me my first regular byline in a major daily. In particular, I’m eternally grateful to Christina Spencer for the initial leap of faith, and to Graham Green, her successor as Comment editor and deservedly someone you’ll never hear a bad word about.

In some rather trying times last year, the Citizen crew – including the editor-in-chief I’ve had the privilege of indirectly writing under – were wonderfully supportive. You can never take that sort of thing for granted, and I won’t soon forget it.

Don't leave home without blogging (II)

I'm taking a week off - and for once, that includes being away from the computer. So no blogging till next weekend. Y'all come back then, now, y'here?

A little help, here?

Apparently, I’m going to be conducting a seminar next month at which I’ll be speaking about blogging for a solid hour.

Now, ahem, I have a nice little joke in mind, and a few solid points I’m fairly sure I can raise, but I haven’t quite figured out how we’re going to fill sixty minutes. Looks like I know what I’ll be doing up north next week on my vacation. But if you have any swell tips, feel free to pass ’em on.

Just the facts, man...

You know, I love Neale News. But Brian, if you’re reading this – lose the obsession with New York Post/Washington Times stories about the evils of John Kerry. You’re not Drudge, which means you don’t have to have an agenda. Just help us navigate our way through the day’s news, and we’ll be happy.
