Radwanski's Ramblings...

Narcissistic post of the day

At Comments Please, I’ve been identified as a “vulgar hepcat liberal.” Meanwhile, in some sort of Libertines discussion, I’ve been pronounced “a disinterested numpty” and “a school principal type.”

God bless the Internet, where I’ve finally learned about my split personality.

The fallen Prince

I’ve been getting my share of Marc Emery e-mail this week. And as a hepcat liberal who favours legalizing pot (despite not partaking myself) and was previously photographed in a “Free Marc Emery” t-shirt, I wish I could back him up. But if the charges are legit, the dude didn’t mildly violate our laws as a form of social disobedience – he violated another country’s laws by selling an illegal substance (a lot of an illegal substance) on their turf.

Emery isn’t dumb, and he’s certainly not ignorant of drug laws. So much as I wish it were otherwise, I don’t think he’s a victim this time.

Unsolicited advice on how to spend your Thursday night

At last check, there were still tickets left for tonight’s gig by the Shout Out Louds (whom I’ve profiled in today’s Post) at Lee’s Palace.

With the Redwalls opening, we’ve got Swedes who sound like American indie-poppers, and Chicagoans who wish they were from Liverpool. Both are pretty good at faking it, so you really can’t go wrong.

Sometimes, I just don't know my own power (II)

Apparently, John Tory wasn’t the only Conservative leader moved to immediate action by Friday’s column. Stephen Harper, come on down.

Seriously, kudos to Harper. Personally, I’d prefer to see outright investment in a better public transit system than subsidies for those who use a crappy one. But it’s to his credit that he’s trying to make clear to urbanites – particularly in the GTA – that he’s interested in their concerns. It’s something the Tories have generally failed to do, and it’s part of the reason they’re still behind in the polls.

Sometimes, I just don't know my own power

Glad to see John Tory was so impressed with Friday’s column that he immediately called for better public transit.

Look, those of us in the business of giving unsolicited opinions have to find ways to convince ourselves that it all really matters. So that’s my line and I’m sticking to it, okay?

Hush, hush

Went to one of those sessions I’m not supposed to talk about (yet) on Friday, with a sneak listen to an unfinished, much-anticipated sophomore disc by a certain band named after a certain arch-duke.

I still suspect the Scotsmen in question are in for a backlash, but it might not be deserved. Like any band following up a massive debut, what they need to do is stretch themselves without getting away from what worked for them the first time. My quick take, subject to future listenings, is that they’ve done that. And if nothing else, they’ve got a high-energy, super-catchy first single.

Best sign is probably this: When I was at the listening session for Coldplay some months back, and was asked if I wanted to re-listen to any tracks after going through X&Y once, I couldn’t say no quickly enough. This time, I actually stuck around for a bit – and could have happily listened to the whole thing again, if I’d had time.

Sympathy for the devil(s)

Last night, I found myself doing something no Argos fan should ever have to: cheering for the Ticats. For it to be fun to beat them, they have to at least be competitive. So much as I don’t actually want them to get particularly good, I’m hoping they can at least win a game or two before Labour Day.

Besides, Greg Marshall seemed like a pleasant enough guy when I saw him at a Grey Cup party last year, and he’s getting closer to Pinellaesque rage with every game. If the Ticats get beat at home by the Renegades next week, I’m a little concerned his head might blow clean off his body.

This/that/other (all the information you need on b-movies, space travel, video games and Police Academy alumni)

  • The whole Homolka/Bernardo movie debate is pretty played at this point. But you have to admire Tim Danson’s take on the film’s name change from Deadly to Karla: “My instinct is that it was exploitive and takes advantage of the publicity it has received in the United States.” This guy is aware that he’s the one who was giving it all the free publicity, right?

  • Remember when we were kids, and we thought we’d all be orbiting earth and staying in space hotels by now? Er, it’s not really happening, is it?

  • Poor Grandma. I mean, imagine, buying Grand Theft Auto for the 14-year-old so he can pretend to beat hookers to death and hit guys with his car to take their cash, only to find out there’s a hidden sex scene. No wonder she’s suing.

  • New CD reviews! Steve Guttenberg! (Note: Item 1 has nothing to do with Item 2. But depending on your frame of mind, at least one should offer the sort of cultural insight you’re looking for. Probably Guttenberg, since the disc reviews include Alanis.)

    As good as it gets

Paul Wells is right – the PM’s smartest move in a while has been keeping his head down this summer. But I’d argue he’s benefiting just as much from the joys of lowered expectations.

Until recently, Martin was being judged by the lofty standards he set for himself – or, really, that were set for him by a fawning media – while he was busy dethroning Chretien. Now, he’s being judged by the standard of his atrocious first year in office.

We’re no longer expecting him to be an especially good PM; we’re just impressed when he doesn’t screw up. He’s managed to achieve that lately, and the polls reflect it.

Not to give ideas, but wouldn't heroin have been a little closer to home?

I know I shouldn’t laugh. But there’s something funny about this. It’s like a ’70s James Bond plot.

Gotta love the part about the Colombian drug lords deciding that killing thousands of customers with their product would be bad for business. Good call, guys.

    Shocker!

For those keeping track, the Franz Ferdinand backlash began last week. Welcome to the tip of the iceberg.

    Butt out

In a three-day span this past weekend, I spent about 16 hours in a car (to NYC and back) with three other guys – two of whom are smokers. Much as their company was delightful, and they were kind enough to roll down the windows when taking their puffs, I still could’ve done without the fumes.

That said, it was a private space. I was there voluntarily, as was the other non-smoker. And if anyone had stuck his head into the car and told my friends to stop smoking, I would’ve been inclined to tell them to screw off. But apparently, that’s exactly the situation we may face the next time we drive through New Jersey.

As I’ve said before, I’m all for smoking bans in restaurants, bars, and other public places. Less so legions and private clubs, though I at least see the argument. But the only compelling argument for banning it in cars would be if it posed a threat to other drivers – and I suspect sipping a hot coffee, which probably won’t be cracked down on anytime soon, has much more potential for disaster.

I’m not one to invoke Big Brother every five minutes. But this is damn Big Brotherish.

Forgive me, Pitchfork, for I have sinned

If I were a real music writer, I’m pretty sure I’d be going to music writer hell.

For starters, I see nothing particularly special about Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I had no interest in going to see Dinosaur Jr. I missed Teenage Fanclub (who I actually was interested in seeing) last night because I was too wiped out from the weekend. And much as I recognize Sufjan Stevens’ Illinois is very, very worthy, I can’t quite get motivated for repeat listens.

Meanwhile, I heard the Killers’ disc for the first time in a while over the weekend and still enjoyed it – which in itself is probably enough to lose the respect of most of the music snobs who were briefly all over it when they thought it was an indie album.

On the other hand, I do kinda like these guys, or at least the girl who fronts them, so that should buy me a bit of cred as long as they stay under the radar this side of the Atlantic.
