Radwanski's Ramblings...

You really thought they were giving Sarkis actual responsibilities?

Warren, Paul and others have quite rightly been on Martin for handing Sarks Assadourian yet another soft landing place. But I’m not sure most of us realize just how soft it actually is.

As I mentioned in one of those comments threads yesterday, it’s important not to confuse the judges on the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) with citizenship judges. The IRB has real power. Citizenship judges, on the other hand, appear to serve almost entirely a ceremonial role – although nobody, including government types and immigration experts, seems to be exactly sure what they do.

The relevant question, then, might be less why Sarkis was appointed than why these postings exist at all. Wouldn’t it be better to save the “judges”’ $80,000 or $90,000 annual salaries by having bureaucrats perform the citizenship ceremonies, and use the cash to hire some more immigration case workers to help ease the backlog?

Ahem

I’d love to know more about Adscam, and I’m sure a lot of hard work went into this. So if only the Fraser Institute would stop torquing its reports, we’d be all set.

Remember Live 8?

If so, you might still be interested in my belatedly posted review from Monday’s Post.

The first piece to net me an e-mail complaining that I'm anti-Canadian for slagging Ben Mulroney. But hopefully not the last.

Not that this hasn't been said before, but...

Driving home yesterday, I listened to CBC Radio – probably the least sensationalist media outlet in the country – as communications experts lauded Karla Homolka’s post-release performance.

So we’ve finally done it. The copious Karla coverage the past couple of months not only has us on a first-name basis with the wretched woman – it’s finally turned her into a celebrity first, and a killer second. We’re so used to seeing her now that she’s no longer particularly horrifying; she’s just Karla, another cultural icon. A particularly loathsome one, true, but somehow that’s all trivialized by now.

Or maybe it’s just me. But I know I got a lot of agreement on this last month, and I’m guessing it’d get a lot more if it were published now.

Next up

Via Daifallah, I note that Danielle Smith will now be appearing in blog form when she’s not on Global or in the Herald.

This is, I should think, a welcome development. From what I know of her, Danielle’s the sort of conservative we should all be glad to have around – one doesn’t foam at the mouth, isn’t so dogmatic as to be completely predictable, and seems to respect those on the other side of the spectrum. I expect I’ll disagree with much of it (most of it, even), but I’m looking forward to seeing what she comes up with on this thing.

Also, I meant to weigh in on the Soros/Nationals thing that she tackled on July 4, but never got around to it. Aside from the “If I were American I’d probably be inclined to vote Republican” part, just assume I’d have written what she did.

Word to the wise

At last check, the Horseshoe still had a few tickets for tonight’s Soundtrack of Our Lives show. If they could make an early gig at the lifeless Guvernment work this spring, they should absolutely rock the ’shoe.

"Paintball can also inject a necessary realism into training"

I must confess I’ve never actually played paintball. So if this isn’t as insane as it sounds, someone please let me know.

Otherwise, I’m inclined to think this’ll be a good idea around the same time professional race car drivers start training on Go Karts.

Post I'm most likely to regret down the road

I spent about 13 hours on Saturday watching Live 8 on TV, and another couple yesterday filling in the gaps through AOL’s feed, so I could review it for today’s Post. So you’ll have to forgive me if I don’t much feel like talking about it anymore. If you’re desperate to know my take, buy the paper. (Look for the review in the front section, with the decidedly non-rock ‘n’ roll head furniture I try to keep away from my music stuff.) Or wait a couple of days, and it’ll turn up on here.

Anyway, on a moderately fresher note, I promised a few days ago to run through some of my favourite discs and shows from the first half of ’05. So very briefly, here it is.

On the canned music front, the one disc that I absolutely love so far this year is the Hold Steady’s Separation Sunday. It’s possible that by year’s end I’ll be sick of it, but for now it gets better with every listen. After that, and in no particular order, the ones that stand out off the top of my head are the Eels’ Blinking Lights and Other Revelations; Bright Eyes’ I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning; the Raveonettes’ Pretty In Black; Martha Wainwright’s self-titled debut, and Jason Collett’s Idols of Exile.

I’m also very high on Mando Diao (more on them momentarily), but I’m not sure I can objectively classify Hurricane Bar as a great album so much as one I just really, really like.

In terms of what I’ve seen live, the Arcade Fire’s Music Hall gig (the first of their three-night run) is pretty untouchable. After that would be the aforementioned Mando Diao at the Horseshoe – just a fantastic little rock show, even objectively; Razorlight at Lee’s Palace, with Johnny Borrell proving himself as charismatic a frontman as Britrock’s new generation has to offer; the insanely high-energy Kasabian at the Kool Haus; Rilo Kiley at the Opera House; and the Raveonettes at Lee’s.

Oh, and Montreal’s Lovely Feathers at NXNE – too brief to judge properly, but damn promising.

All this will probably change by New Year’s, or maybe just the next time I have a couple of beers, but it’s what comes to mind this minute.
