Radwanski's Ramblings...

Thursday February 9, 2006

You're the disillusioned one?

Presumably, one does not become a top forestry executive by being an idiot. So does David Emerson really expect us to believe that he can't understand why people were offended that, the day after being elected for one party, he switched to another that only 17% of his contituents had voted for?

Then again, maybe he really is that bad at understanding politics. After all, he did describe his new leader as not being "a scary Mr. Harper" - not exactly the sort of reinforcement the Tories are looking for.

Housekeeping

Very belatedly, here's last Friday's column on media bias. It's a little stale at this point. But if you think the media is biased against you or your party of choice, it might still get under your skin a little.

And speaking of belated, I've added a couple of brief album reviews. I'm going to try to get back to doing these more frequently, so check by when you're in the mood.

Evolution

The new Concretes album is really, really good. Not just ear candy, at least not entirely, but actually with a bit of texture. If they've learned to play a show longer than 40 minutes, we might really have an entry.

Warning: wonkish ramble ahead

Since complaining about Ablonczy being left out of cabinet, I've had a whole bunch of people point out to me that Harper really had no choice. Geographic considerations, you see. Can't have too many people from Calgary. Hence the exclusion of her, not to mention Jason Kenney (of whom I'm not a big fan, but who everyone seemed to expect in cabinet).

Fair point. But among the unwritten rules of Canadian politics that I'm most keen to rewrite, the need to strike a perfect geographic balance in cabinet-making is right up there.

It's imperative that every region be represented at the table by at least one strong voice. But once that's been ensured, the prime minister's main focus in choosing his cabinet should be merit. Instead, in a telling statement of our insecurities, we expect every region to be represented more or less equally at the table - even when the government doesn't have anywhere close to the same number of MPs in each one. And taking it to absurd extremes, we also seem to expect that within those broader regions, the number of ministers will be balanced between the smaller regions therein - i.e. that Calgary not be overrepresented next to Edmonton.

The Conservatives' base is in Alberta; it's where they have the most veteran MPs with long records of service in Ottawa. As a Torontonian, I'd rather see more ministers from there than Harper stretching to find qualified candidates elsewhere - especially if it means looking outside his caucus, as he did to ensure representation in Vancouver and Montreal.

I'm not saying Harper should have neglected striking a regional balance; if he did, he'd have been roasted. But I wish that, collectively, we could worry less about geography and more about merit. Just as I don't expect the PM to strike a perfect mix on gender or race if the talent pool he's drawing from doesn't provide it, I don't see why it's necessary when it comes to region.

Random music notes (special Torontocentric edition)

  • Worst local music news of the year so far: The Docks is emerging as a top music venue. Stars playing there in March is bad enough; now we've got a flashy double-bill of Franz Ferdinand and Death Cab for Cutie. Everyone who's been complaining about the Kool Haus all these years will be singing its praises in no time.

  • I wasn't blown away by their EP, and I wasn't blown away when I saw them live. But Magneta Lane's debut disc is decent. I just wish it wasn't so overproduced.

  • One day they (or he) are (or is) the Ladies and Gentlemen; next day they (or he) are (or his) Small Sins. You can't tell the players without a program.

  • This past Saturday night, I found myself way out of my element. It suffices shows in which sweaty shirtless teenagers slam up against each other are shows I only wind up at by accident, or if I'm forcibly dragged to them. But mark my words: Ill Scarlett will be big before you (or they) know it. And truth be told, they're nice kids.

  • Noted '90s casualty Evan Dando is back in town for the first time in years this coming weekend. Last time he actually proved a surprisingly engaging performer, so it might be worth giving him a shot. But know going in that I provide no guarantees.

At least Day 1 wasn't boring...

The obvious observation: This Emerson thing, and to a lesser extent the Fortier one, is insane. Here's a good news day at the start of the honeymoon, and we should all be talking about the smaller cabinet, the wealth of provincial experience, etc. Instead, Harper cuts the honeymoon short so he can show an electorate that just voted against politics-as-usual that he can do politics-as-usual.

The less obvious observation: I'm not going to sit around griping about the number of women in Cabinet. On this one, I'm with my conservative colleagues - merit should trump gender or any other demographic considerations. But where I do get uncomfortable is in Diane Ablonczy being bypassed in favour of Rona Ambrose.

Nothing against Ambrose, who seems sharp as a tack. But if they were short on spots for Alberta ministers, it's Ablonczy - smart, experienced, decent and a real soldier for her party over the years - who should be in. I hesitate to say this, because Ambrose may prove a great minister, but I can't shake the suspicion that youth and physical attractiveness worked in her favour here - especially considering the way she was blatantly paraded around as an appealing face for the party in the past year.

If that's the case, it's flat-out wrong. Male MPs don't get marketed as "hotties" and then handed jobs over equally or more qualified candidates; neither should female MPs.

I asked, you started to answer...

I'm a little too overloaded with wings, beer, chili, crab cakes and various other stuff consumed while unfavourably comparing the Super Bowl to the Grey Cup to do anything particularly clever with the leadership stuff sent my way yesterday.

On the straight, only moderately stale gossip front, word is that a few aspirants - Brison and Stronach in particular - were beating the drums with considerable enthusiasm at last week's caucus meeting. This is not a huge surprise. Slightly more surprising - or perhaps not, considering he was the out-of-town kid at his first day of school - is that Ignatieff was apparently much less enthusiastic.

A few other observations, starting with this: Much as I kinda like Cauchon, he's got a lot of work to do if he's serious about this. Even centre-left types who'd have to be his base seem either indifferent or unimpressed.

Second, virtually every Liberal I've been in touch with has expressed their utter distaste for Belinda...then proceded to acknowledge she's going to be a force to be reckoned with. To some extent, that's inevitable - as we saw during the Tory leadership, money can buy you love. But unless she has at least a few Liberals actually keen on her, I don't see this going far.

Third, everything I'm seeing tells me Dion is running, or at least very seriously thinking about it. That's good, since Liberals and non-Liberals alike have to recognize the guy as a valuable voice. But I have to say, having sat down for an editorial board meeting with him, that there are going to be major language problems unless his English improves substantially.

Anyway, thanks for the tips, analysis, etc...even on Super Bowl Sunday. Keep it coming.

As if the music stuff wasn't trivial enough...

I don't watch a ton of TV, outside of sports, so I don't write about it here much. Also, I don't want you to think I have ADD. But two things:

Does anyone else find it depressing when the increasingly tired Simpsons takes potshots at the much fresher, funnier Family Guy? Just because it's a cartoon doesn't mean it's plagiarism...if it did, The Simpsons plagiarized The Flinstones.

The next person who turns their nose up when I mention my affinity for the Steve Carrell version of The Office, huffing that they only watch the British version, might get a punch in the face. I refuse to feel guilty for watching the funniest half hour on U.S. television (at least now that Arrested Development seems to be done).

The matchup everyone's talking about today

Lots of interesting stuff floating around out there about who's after Paul Martin's job and who's not. But I want more of it.

So, Liberals: share. No tidbit is too small. I have an unhealthy appetite for leadership gossip, and I'm happy to make this a one-stop shop for others who feel likewise. So long as you don't mind other weird crap - random music ruminations, haranguing about why you should buy Argos tickets, thoughts on the party that actually won the election - mixed in.

Two early predictions that I'll probably regret. One, this thing is going to come down to a Toronto candidate, a Quebecer and a former Tory. The next few months will be about determining which Torontonian (Ignatieff or Dryden, longshot of Rae if he and his brother go after it), which Quebecer (Dion or Cauchon) and which former Tory (Belinda or Brison) it'll be.

Two, and here's where I'm really going out on a limb, Belinda will be a serious contender on the first ballot. She might even be leading. But fewer Liberals will go to her on second ballot than went to Paul Martin's election night party.

    Speaking of random music ruminations...

Richard Ashcroft is a lot more charming than I'd expected.

From reading his UK press, I thought I'd be on the phone with a delusional, self-aggrandizing hot-head. Instead, I got a chilled-out, happy-go-lucky sort who started off by joking about me being one of the three people in North America interested in his work, then had to pause the interview intermittently to talk to his kid.

Admittedly, hearing Richard Ashcroft refer to himself in the third person as "Daddy" made me feel pretty old. Still, more reason not to believe everything you read. Except here, of course.

Wouldn't it be ironic if I could think of a clever way to work "irony" into this headline?

Let Wednesday's piece on Neko Case and Jenny Lewis be a lesson to me: Don't mess with irony.

On one hand, I'm getting e-mail telling me (possibly correctly) that Ryan Adams' country stuff is in no way ironic. On the other, I'm getting stopped in the hallway and told that what stops Lewis' album from really working is that she is coming off ironic.

Next time I write about country girls, remind me to keep it simple.

Anyone else reminded of that old SNL "irony theatre" sketch?
