Wasted youth

In today’s Post, Adam Daifallah contends that what Stephen Harper’s party really needs is a youth wing.

Adam and I both dabbled (or more than dabbled, at times) in youth politics – him with the Young Tories, me with the Young Liberals. But our experiences were evidently pretty different, because I’d argue the last thing the Conservatives need is a youth wing.

Frankly, the youth wings that I belonged to were the lowest of the low within the party – not because of a lack of seniority, but because the politics practiced there was the ugliest, most vicious and most pointless sort imaginable. Kids would enter keen to Make A Difference, and within a matter of months be so consumed with aggressive politicking that they’d become ambitious little twerps who were only concerned with screwing each other over in the most creative ways possible.

I suppose I should be grateful, because my Young Liberal involvement helped eventually turn me off party politics, which turned me on to journalism, which has proven an awful lot more fulfilling. But in hindsight, I can’t quite believe how much time I wasted on that crap. And I’d hate to see others who genuinely want to contribute to the political process make the same mistake.

Wanker update

If you recall my Ian Brown experience of a couple of weeks ago, or if you were unfortunate enough to be at the Mod Club yourself, this won’t surprise you at all. If he’s been pulling this sound schtick every show, I’m surprised it took this long for someone to jump him.

This is why you don't want a separatist helping run the country?

I’m not much a fan of Jean Lapierre. At all. I’ve said, as loudly and as often as possible, that I don’t think he has any place near the federal Cabinet table. But I still think any and all calls for his head over the Jetsgo collapse are completely, 100% absurd.

None of the complaints make any sense. How, exactly, was he supposed to “intervene” when the free-market system in place prevents him from doing so? (If you have a beef on this front, it’s with the folks long before him who deregulated, not the guy who happens to be in Transport now.)

What was he supposed to do, once the airline had already collapsed, to clean up the mess? Jetsgo is gone. Finished. Kaput. Lapierre may have been able to piece together a political career that should have been long buried, but he still can’t be expected to put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

And how, exactly, has he gone “AWOL” by carrying on with a trip to Israel? I don’t know about you, but personally, I’d rather have the man in charge of our airports taking notes in the country with the best airport security in the world - not idly commiserating with stranded March Break travelers. It’s not as though the guy’s on a junket to the Bahamas; he’s in Jerusalem, for crying out loud.

I hate that I’m stuck defending Jean Lapierre. But what I hate even more is the inclination to blame someone - anyone - in a political position when things go wrong.

Lorenzo's hair-raising adventure

Not all Ontario Liberals are as nannyish as their critics like to say. But Lorenzo Berardinetti sure as hell is.

Hey, I’m all for gender equality…when there’s equality to be found. But trying to suggest men and women should pay the same for a haircut – not to mention styling products, clothes and drycleaning - is completely asinine.

Why do I pay less than $20 for a haircut? Because it’s an easy job, and it takes my barber about half an hour, tops. Why does my fiancée – like every other woman I know - pay a lot more? Because she has more specifications, there’s more skill involved, and it takes a lot longer.

Oh, and because she’s willing to. That’s kind of an important part, too, isn’t it?

I’d like to think we’re reduced to this because every battle that matters has been won. But I’m thinking this is just what you get when a rookie backbencher has too much time on his hands.

First time to Montreal in months, and I get to see it pretending to be Ottawa

Ordinarily, I’d rather be heading to Montreal than Austin. But when the Conservative convention is northeast, and South By Southwest is, er, southwest, I’d probably rather be headed thataway.

Nevertheless. Writing about politics is my day job, and I haven’t quit it. And this one should be reasonably interesting, at least compared to the Liberal love-in two weeks ago. Plus, that one was in Ottawa…so this is at least a step up.

All this is a roundabout way of extending the same invite I did heading into the capital. If you’re going to be at the convention and want to catch up, drop me a note. We’ll have a green beer or something.

Fight the power

If ever you’ve wondered what it takes to get MPs to threaten a sit-in, The Hill Times has the answer - on its front page, no less.

Not quite as stupid as what it takes to get Hillary Swank excited, but still pretty stupid.

Random music notes

  • According to Noel Gallagher, the forthcoming Oasis album - Don’t Believe the Truth, which is actually a pretty clever name- has been pared down from 66 songs. And the lead single, Lyla, was “specifically designed for pogoing.”

Hoo boy, this don’t sound too good.

  • The Stands are the new Thrills. Born and bred across the pond, but wishing they were hanging around San Francisco in the ’60s. More Dylan thrown in with the Byrds, but still the same general idea.

Not fantastic. But listenable enough that I want to get there on time when they open for Brendan Benson at Lee’s next month.

  • What is it about the Doves that makes me like their albums the first time I listen to them, and then never listen to them again?

  • When did Gwen Stefani become the most annoying woman on the planet? Not that I was ever a huge fan, but…damn.

  • There are some good artists nominated in a few categories. But honestly…if they cancelled the Junos tomorrow, do you know a single person not directly involved who’d be disappointed?
