Meet your fearless PM
Friday's column on the Caledonia mess suggested that, for all the hoopla over his decisive, no-nonsense approach to government, Stephen Harper's stomach might actually be a bit weak. And I'm leaning all the more in that direction considering that the PM's bizarre refusal to attend the AIDS conference is being chalked up to not wanting to be booed.
Now, it should be said that the source on this is Stephen Lewis, who's probably not all that favourably disposed toward Harper to begin with. But I've been hearing the same rationale elsewhere as well. And if it's true that our PM isn't tough enough to absorp a few jeers to advance the interests of millions of impoverished people infected with a horrific terminal disease, "Stephen Harper" and "tough" should never again be said in the same sentence.

Of course, Jimmy K was Harper's first choice...
I can understand why certain people - Maria Minna, for instance - are vexed by this whole Wajid Khan thing. If you're a Liberal, it's not exactly the ultimate act of loyalty on Khan's part, and it does add a rather weird dimension to caucus meetings.
From the outside, though, it looks a lot better. Are there politics at play in Harper's invitation? Well, duh. But for ages, we've all been complaining about MPs - government and opposition alike - lacking a meaningful role. Now we've got a guy who's by all accounts bright and knowledgeable about the topic at hand being recruited to provide perspective on some of the most sensitive issues facing the government - even though he's not consented to switch sides, and probably won't (if only for re-election reasons).
A little cross-partisanship never hurt anyone. Well, unless the guy being cross-partisan is Ontario chair for your leadership campaign, I guess. Then it's probably not so good. But tough though it may be, I'm prepared to overlook the tragic consequences for Joe Volpe in favour of the greater good...as I'm sure Joe is, as always. >> Send your comments to

Is this karma for brushing off the DFA split?
So you go away for the long weekend, zone out of music news for a bit, and then come back to the startling discovery that one of your favourite local bands is calling it quits.
I already had the Deadly Snakes' August 25 gig at the Horseshoe on my calendar, since I pretty much go to all their shows. Now it has to be circled and asterisked, because apparently it's the last time they'll ever play together. I thought Max sounded a little miffed about Andre's solo career when I interviewed him a few months ago, but it never occurred to me that splitting was in the cards - especially since Porcella was pretty much the best thing they'd done, and had the Polaris nomination to prove it.
On the bright side, I'm told they'll be playing two sets that final night. At least they're going out in style. >> Send your comments to

Mega-housekeeping
Owing to the aforementioned computer programs, I've been worse than usual about updating stuff around here. No longer. Both the column and the music archives are now more or less up to date. Whether you're looking for praise of Carolyn Bennett or an interview with the Beastie Boys, it's all here.

What would Ralph do?
The Liberals are in office, and decide to spend $8-billion on defence.
Now, it just so happens that the best manufacturers for what they're
looking for are in Western Canada - and if they let the procurement
process run itself, that's where the spending would mostly wind up. But
seeking to help their political fortunes elsewhere, they grab control of the process and commence handing out contracts to Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada. What do you suppose the response is?
Just asking.

Oh, grow up
I love Montreal, where I'm spending the weekend, so much that I'd happily live here if my French was a little better and I wouldn't gain 800 pounds from eating every meal at Schwartz's or Ben's. And I love its little football stadium – along with the walk-up through the university campus – so much that even watching the Argos embarrass themselves there (more on Thursday night's unpleasantness here) isn't without its charms. But there's one thing about the city, or at least its sports fans, that continues to leave a bad taste in my mouth.
I'd heard previously about Quebecers protesting the national anthem, but having never seen it myself I kind of thought they'd outgrown it. Then I went to a Leafs/Habs game at the Bell Centre last year, and the guy beside me sat petulantly with his arms folded while everyone else stood up.
I assumed he was just an isolated jerk. But this time, at Molson Stadium, two Alouettes fans in our immediate vicinity did likewise.
These weren't exactly radicals; they were older guys, decked out in Als jerseys, who were perfectly friendly and good-natured toward us the rest of the game. But I found the level of disrespect hard to get past.
It's a free country, and happily it's their right to do whatever they want during the anthem. But even if they don't consider it their own, it's in staggeringly poor taste to openly show their contempt for it. If everyone at the Rogers Centre or the ACC can stand politely during the Star-Spangled Banner, it's not too much to ask people attending a Canadian Football League game to behave like adults during O Canada. >> Send your comments to

Random music notes
It's always a bit nerve-wracking to go see a band you've heavily hyped based on their album; if it turns out that they suck live, you look like a moron. Thankfully, there was no danger of that withy The Hold Steady this past week. I can now graduate from saying that Separation Sunday is one my favourite albums to saying that these guys are one of my favourite bands.
I'm baffled: How does Oasis put out a best-of that includes All Around the World and Half the World Away, but not Live Forever?
Time for a confession: I never got Death from Above. At all. At the risk of sounding geriatric, it just sounded like a pile of noise to me. And though I can't put my finger on it, something about Jesse Keeler irks me. So I guess I'm not as heartbroken as some people about this.
This isn't really music-related, aside from Kevin Smith's inspired use of Soul Asylum's underrated mid-90s tune Misery for the closing credits, but Clerks II was a slightly more poignant experience than I'd expected. Admittedly, that's a strange thing to say about a movie in which the climactic scene involves a guy getting frisky with a donkey. But I can't think of another movie that's made me feel as old as this one.
