If only Agony Elsie was still writing...
I feel for Peter MacKay. Honestly, I do. Much as I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him after the whole David Orchard mess (even if you think Orchard’s an oddball, a signed agreement is a signed agreement), he’s a pretty likeable guy. And having your high-profile relationship ended on national TV is pretty humiliating.
But seriously, man:. Suck it up. Don’t have Stephen Harper explain you’re too devastated to show your face in public, which conjures images of you locked in your bedroom eating Haagen Dazs straight from the container. Don’t turn up the next night talking in hushed tones, looking like you’re about to burst into tears, about how hurt you are. And for the love of God, don’t have your dad go on TV moments after to spell out the fatherly advice he’s been giving you behind closed doors.
If there’s been a more ridiculous moment in Canadian politics, at least in this lifetime, I can’t think of it.
(Oh, and kudos to anyone who got the headline on this post. Your Pundit t-shirt is in the mail.)

Wait...
You mean this Gurmant Grewal tape suggests the Liberals might’ve gone to Belinda, not the other way around?! Hot damn! Who’d have thunk it?

I swear, I'm not just a sucker for pretty indie girls who slag George Bush...although it helps
High hopes for Rilo Kiley at the Opera House tonight. Interviewed Jenny Lewis the other day, and she’s pretty charming. Plus she delayed the interview for a bit so she could track down a burger, which I totally respect.
Profile is in today’s Post. It’ll be up here soon, but if you’re heading to the show, you might find it mildly interesting. At least, that’s what I’ll tell myself.

Lessons (re)learned
A quick take on today’s craziness, as I’m a bit on the run…
1.)Belinda may come to regret it. As a Conservative, post-election she’d either have been a senior minister or a leadership frontrunner. Now, there’s a chance she’ll be neither.
2.) Harper should regret it, now, but I don’t think he does. Actually, I have the impression he’s pretty pleased to be rid of her, and to be vindicated after painting her as an opportunist. What he doesn’t seem to realize is that it’s another sign of his inability to make friends with potential enemies, and a major blow to the Conservatives’ chances in Ontario.
3.) Say what you will about Martin, but the one thing he’s truly, unequivocally good at is recruiting people to his side. He did it campaigning for the leadership, and he’s done it – against all odds – as PM.
More on all this, or most of this, in tomorrow’s Post.

The wonder of a government that actually has a vague idea what it's doing
Friday’s column may not be the spiciest thing I’ve ever written. But it’s important, now and then, to give governments credit where it’s due. And for all their troubles early on, McGuinty’s Liberals are faring rather well these days…something reflected, I think, in the rather perfunctory feel to criticism of last week’s budgets from those obligated to criticiz - the CTF, the Sun, and even John Tory.
Actually, Tory’s in a particularly rough spot right now. One has the sense that, as more or less a centrist, he’d have come up with a fairly similar budget if he were in power. But he obviously can’t say that. So he’s stuck trying to define himself in confusing and contradictory ways as he struggles to contrast himself with McGuinty & co. And to make matters worse, he’s pulling a boy scout act where he’s letting the Liberals beat him up without fighting back properly.
There’s a ton of goodwill toward Tory, because he’s a genuinely nice guy who’s always treated people well. But there’s also a mounting sense that if he performs in the next campaign like he’s been performing since winning the leadership, he’s going to get destroyed. Lucky for him, he’s still got plenty of time to grow into the job. But I doubt his party will give him as much time as the Liberals gave McGuinty; I suspect it’s ’07 or bust.

This won't hurt a bit
I’m not entirely sold on the somber, reflective Springsteen of Devils and Dust. But I absolutely love the demented, hyperkinetic Springsteen who turns up on The Hold Steady’s new disc.
Okay, so it’s not really the Boss…it’s Craig Finn. And he doesn’t really sing…he rants, all angry and sardonic-like, about drugs and religion and whatever else fits into Separation Sunday’s narrative, while classic guitar rock chords and keyboards and various other garage rock sounds go off behind him.
It’s demanding enough that you’ll need a bunch of listens to get the full gist of it. But it’s also so good that’ll leave you talking out loud about how good it is while you’re listening by yourself.

Can't wait for that leadership campaign, though
Maybe I was wrong, but I always thought Cabinet ministers were supposed to rise above the fray – not use the power of their office to smear political opponents
Then again, I also always thought standards would be high enough that Joe Volpe would never be the most senior federal representative of Canada’s largest province, so what do I know?

Still, nothing makes up for inspiring Keane...
As proof I’m capable of being objective, my review of Coldplay’s Kool Haus gig (from yesterday’s Post) is here. I don’t particularly like what they do, but they do it very well.
More on them in a bit, when certain things that can’t be talked about can be talked about. I will say, because I think I’m allowed to, that X/Y is going to sell a ton of copies – mostly because literally every song could be released as a single, which means it’s going to be getting radio play forever.
That’s also what makes it a bit of a tiring, grating listen – every song reaches for the sky, starting slow and building to a massive crescendo. Toning it down here and there, or trying something a little different, would’ve made it more of an album. But their fans will love it.
