Radwanski's Ramblings...

Now, he's just a temporary federalist

Paul Wells has advised his readers that the Quebec Liberals' website is finally operational. And now that it is, I highly, highly recommend a visit to Jean Lapierre's bio.

There, you'll learn that the avowed nationalist didn;t belong to a separatist party. Hell no. Rather, "(f)ollowing the failure of the Meech Lake accord, Mr. Lapierre sat as an independent and subsequently joined the ad hoc temporary rainbow coalition (my emphasis) that was the Bloc Québecois at the time."

That would be the "ad hoc temporary rainbow coalition" brought together solely by its members' common commitment to break up the country, right? Just checking.

I'd still take them to beat the Ticats...

Speaking of online laughs, a friend has helpfully directed me to the new North American Indoor Football League, which near as I can tell is based only in Canada. In any case, you won't want to miss its alliteration-friendly list of teams.

My personal favourite is the Quebec Quantum. You can just see them coming up with that one: "Quebec Queens...no...Quebec Quagmire...uh-uh...Quebec Quandary...nope...Quebec Quantam...yessir!"

At least they'll be able to pioneer the "Quantam Leap" touchdown celebration. But I'm not exactly sure how well "quantum" translates into French. Unfortunately, my French-English dictionary doesn't know either. Does it even translate into French?

Actually, it doesn't translate so well into english either. "Quantum," in case you're wondering, is defined as "the smallest amount or unit of something, especially energy." Brilliant.

Paul Martin: masochist

For all the bashing Paul Martin has taken lately, he's surrounded by some pretty smart people. So what on earth has happened to their collective IQ since they took over the PMO?

The Martinites' decision to align themselves with the McGuinty Liberals on the health premium is among the stupidest things the've done the past few months, and that's saying something. Even if voters eventually conclude that the premium is a worthwhile investment, they're royally pissed right now and they're looking for someone to punish. That won't be McGuinty, since he doesn't have to go to the polls for three-and-a-half years. But now, Martin has handed Ontarians a golden opportunity to vent in the voting booth on June 28.

So what should the PM have done when asked about yesterday's budget? Easy. Dismiss it as a provincial matter, say that he's looking forward to working with the Ontario government on health care but won't comment on decisions that don't affect him, and go merrily on his way. But that evidently would have been too easy.

Wake me when it's over

Back from Ontario budget lock-up, where I was writing an op-ed for tomorrow's Post. As an Ontarian, I'm not crazy about what Greg Sorbara sold us - it's a lot of pain for what seems like very little gain. But as a journalist, I absolutely hate it.

That's not just because I'm legally required to be cynical (though that's probably part of it), but because it's absolutely impossible to write anything interesting about this budget - or, for that matter, this government. The McGuinty Liberals are like an amorphous blob, picking and choosing policies left and right without any defining script. You can write about issues in isolation, but there's no way to tie it together into a central theme.

Maybe it's a good thing they're so anti-ideological that they can't be pigeon-holed. I don't know. But I do know that, based on the way Sorbara was grilled in this afternoon's press conference, coverage is going to be absolutely brutal.

Grey plus green does not equal electoral gold

Last year, the Ontario Tories desperately tried to keep their hold on power by bribing seniors with, among other things, a promise that they'd no longer have to pay property taxes for education. Now, the federal Liberals - apparently subscribing to the Tory view that old folks can be easily bought off - are reportedly keen to try the same trick. True, the Liberal plans (rental supplements, an increased income supplement for the poor, etc.) are much more defensible. But given its timing, the politics behind this are pretty transparent.

Since he's not spending much time providing useful opposition at Queen's Park, maybe Ernie Eves should call Paul Martin and tip him off that this trick didn't exactly work wonders the first time. Seniors weren't born yesterday (okay, bad cliche in this case), and they're not going to jump up and down every time you wave cash at them.

Somehow, I doubt this'll be the last time I'm led to compare the Martin Liberals to the Eves Tories. The only difference is that, when Ernie's party was busy imploding, there was a credible alternative ready and waiting.

The only thing the Pope finds more offensive is Muslims' attitude toward gays...

Is it just me, or is there something a bit rich about the Vatican offering advice on women's rights? Just asking.

Sounding Auf

I really wanted to like Melissa Auf Der Maur's debut solo album (okay, the debut album by her band, which is not coincidentally called Auf Der Maur). Nice Canadian girl, first chance out of Courtney/Billy's shadow, bit of a journalism connection through her late father, etc. But I'm afraid it kinda sucks.

For someone we've only heard play bass till now, she can sing all right. But it's sorta like listening to Hole, without the edge and minus Courtney's underrated ear for a tune.

Just thought I'd warn you. Since we've switched from reviews to recommendations in the Post (I'll explain some other time), the only place I can tell you not to buy stuff is here. So there you go.
