Radwanski's Ramblings...

Thursday July 21, 2005

It's so on

Lorrie Goldstein belatedly responded to the now-infamous “Do Conservatives Dislike Canada” column yesterday. Er, sort of. Mostly, he accused me of claiming conservatives hate Canada (which I never said), then proceeded to make the case that liberals hate Canada because they think it’s full of racists…which was either a satirical spin on conservative-bashing or the most contrived column to appear in the Sun in weeks, which is saying something.

Either way, it didn’t have much to do with me…I don’t think I’ve ever thrown around “racist” or “homophobe” tags, and I don’t intend to start. With all respect to Lorrie, who’s often a good read, many of the responses I got via e-mail were more thoughtful and provocative than this.

And no, I haven't been forced into exile by Lorrie Goldstein

I’ll be on hiatus until Monday. Going to go bite the Big Apple…hope you won’t be too shattered by the lack of updates.

Sorry.

Cheers

If I were Greg Sorbara, I probably wouldn’t be too keen to privatize liquor sales, either. When your province is billions of dollars in the red, unloading one of your biggest cash cows – and one that works, all things considered, reasonably well – isn’t an overly palatable option.

That said, I’m not Greg Sorbara. So I can freely admit, on the assumption that I’ll never wind up with the authority to actually make the decision, that I find it completely impossible to make the case for maintaining the government monopoly (or quasi-monopoly) on policy grounds.

Truth is, I’d prefer to see our liquor laws liberalized well beyond retail sales. Extend closing time, or eliminate it entirely…lower the drinking age to 18…ditch the archaic rules restricting everything from advertising to happy hours…it’s all good with me.

Society already operates on the assumption that alcohol, consumed responsibly, is not a bad thing. So there’s little reason we shouldn’t acknowledge that in our laws, cracking down on those whose consumption leads to reckless behaviour, but leaving adults free to make their own choices.

The joys of municipal politics

I doubt he had anything to do with it. But merely waiting so long to intervene in this Miss Universe silliness is David Miller’s biggest strategic mistake since taking office. Seriously.

Not to say he hasn’t made any decisions with graver social/financial consequences. But truth is, most people have no idea what the mayor does. So when it comes to public opinion, superficialities matter even more than they do federally or provincially.

Quick: What’s the single most memorable incident of June Rowlands’ mayoralty? Thank you. I rest my case.

Never again

My music snobbery isn’t always up to snuff, but I’m right there with Chromewaves in detesting the Docks. After last fall’s Franz Ferdinand gig, I vowed never to go back there for another concert. So the Bloc Party and New Pornographers bookings are going to test my resolve. As of now, I’m still resolute in my commitment to staying far, far away.

Fight the power

The last season before the lockout, Leafs TV was part of my digital cable package (mostly for the “Game in an Hour” feature). I didn’t bother with it last year, for obvious reasons, but would probably be inclined to renew it this year – that is, if it wasn’t for its biggest selling point.

Starting this year, a bunch of regular season games (a dozen, I think) that would’ve previously been on regular cable will only be available on the specialty channel. So in other words, you have to pay the Leafs extra to have the privilege of watching them.

What a shameful thing to do. For years, tickets have been far too expensive for most fans to afford. So it’s only through TV that they’ve been able to experience their team. Now, they’re being told they can’t even do that without paying through the nose.

If I want to watch a game that’s only on Leafs TV, I’ll go to a sports bar. There’s no way in hell I’m helping them screw over their fans yet again.

A victory for democracy (seriously)

So much for the theory that the Liberals would be the beneficiaries of the new fundraising rules. Naturally, Gomery is getting most of the credit. But I suspect there’s more to it than that.

When big business is writing the cheques, the governing party is always going to reap the rewards. But when the onus switches more toward individuals, ideology is more important than incumbency. And since the middle-of-the-road Liberals generally inspire less passion than their rivals, they’d probably be facing an uphill battle regardless of Adscam – though obviously, it hasn’t helped.

The obvious answer for the Grits is to come up with some fresh ideas that excite potential donors enough to take out their chequebooks. But if nothing else has inspired that, I doubt even empty coffers will do the trick.

Random music notes

  • The new Black Rebel Motorcycle Club disc, Howl, is a very pleasant surprise. After their disappointing sophomore disc, I’d lost faith; by going in a totally different direction, they’ve restored it. Less affected cool + newfound country/folk/blues/gospel leanings = much more interesting music. Hopefully they’ve also changed from being notoriously lousy interviews, because I may have to follow up on this.

  • Promising developments on the local scene, courtesy Paper Bag – the new Deadly Snakes and Fembots arrived in the mail, and they’re both rather good. The former is more of an immediate grabber; the latter, I suspect, will be the one for the long-haul. In any case, there’s no lack of evolution on both fronts.

  • I suspect I’ll change my mind, but the New Pornographers’ Twin Cinema isn’t quite doing it for me so far. Since Electric Version was a grower, I’ll give it time.

  • Poor Pete Doherty. He broke up his first band, is in the process of screwing up his second, can’t shake the crack (and possibly the smack), got blasted in the U.K. for his wacked-out Elton duet at Live 8, may or may not have a home…and now this.

  • Last week was apparently hip-hop week ‘round here, and now you can enjoy it with the k-os interview and a K’Naan disc review in the usual place. Look for a K’Naan interview in the next little while – then I’ll go back to my usual, narrower taste.

The latest from the Gord Martineau line

Spotted yesterday leaving an afternoon movie: a guy wearing a shirt that read “WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION,” with an arrow pointing down to his crotch.

This wouldn’t be all that funny if it’d been worn ironically – or at least, I’d be laughing with him rather than at him. But I’m pretty sure it wasn’t.

Guaranteed to be of more interest to normal, non-blogging people

It’s a scorching-hot summer, and a slow domestic news week, and nobody much feels like talking about politics. So I wrote this week’s column (in today’s Post, on here shortly) on, uh, music downloading.

Seriously…it’s interesting. And it should cool things off a little after last weekend’s brouhaha (which, incidentally, Monte Solberg has now responded to.) I promise to get back to offending people again next week.

    Speaking of offending people...

How much nasty e-mail must John Ibbitson have gotten over this yesterday?

Truth be told, much as I agree with him on Klein’s future, even I found the condescending tone of this one a bit much. Hopefully, Albertans were too distracted by the good news about cattle to get too upset.

    The k-os theories

As mentioned a few days ago, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with all the stuff k-os, aka Kevin, said in our interview a few days ago. So instead of sticking readers with 800 words of my ramblings and a few of his quotes, we went with a straight Q&A format.

If you’re even a marginal fan (of his, not mine), grab a look at it in today’s Arts section. He’s an interesting dude.
