Radwanski's Ramblings...

Anyone else miss the days when guys like Harper just ignored Quebec, and life was so much simpler?

I have not, sadly, seen the Chantal Hebert column on Stephen Harper’s Quebec City speech that Paul Wells has twice cited. So maybe I’m covering well-treaded ground. But quite apart from all the other bizarro aspects of Harper’s address (the defence of cozying up to the Bloc, the endorsement of “asymmetrical federalism" and a greater role for Quebec in international affairs, the consideration of Belgian-style federalism that divides federal authority not just geographically but to linguistic communities as well), I find myself intrigued by one line in particular: “Federalism has well-served Canadians – and Quebeckers – since 1867.”

Canadians and Quebecekers? Hmm…where have I heard that before? Maybe from the same people who also like to refer to “Canada and Quebec” as though they’re two separate countries? Looks like Harper might be spending a little too much time hanging around his new friends.

How not to spend your university years...

I found this Globe story from the weekend rather amusing. Apparently, a big part of the reason the future of the PQ has “never been so uncertain” is that “the party’s youth wing is in revolt,” with five of its nine executive members resigning in a huff over the tactics of Bernard Landry’s supporters.

Now, I’m more than happy to learn of trouble in the merry separatist ranks. And I think Landry is an embarrassment, so I wouldn’t blame Péquistes – young or otherwise – for getting tired of his act. But was also once involved in youth politics, in a past life I’d sometimes rather forget, so I also know better than to take this sort of thing too seriously.

For many of its more active participants, youth politics is all about this sort of melodrama. There’s a certain type that gets into this stuff because they want to be at the centre of the action, but then find it frustrating that nobody outside the party – nor, for the most part, inside it – is paying all that much attention. One of the few ways to get their names in print and to seem like big-time players is to stage some sort of dramatic resignation, or at least to make plenty of noise about youth revolting, the party being split in two, and so on. In this case, they appear to have achieved all of the above.

Maybe I have these guys wrong, and this particular dispute is entirely for real without any hint of self-promotion. But forgive me if I’m a bit cynical – I guess that’s what happens when you spend too much time hanging around Young Liberals/Tories/New Democrats yourself.

I get along...minus anything I can quote

Finally saw the Libertines live last night, at the Opera House. I thought they were pretty stellar, considering the band’s playing with one hand tied behind its back minus its co-frontman. The two friends I brought with me – neither of whom were fans coming in – weren’t overly impressed, though, which suggests to me they might be an acquired taste. But most of the faithful on hand certainly seemed satisfied enough.

Only one problem: Carl Barat is a terrible interview. I mean, he’s pleasant enough, and I think reasonably thoughtful. But the man is completely incomprehensible – at least when his hangover and a case of the sniffles combine with his thick accent to produce a series of barely audible mumbles. I recorded both digitally and the old-fashioned way, and both sound like gibberish.

On the bright side, at least I fared better than the MuchMusic crew, who had him wander off mid-interview to make out with his girlfriend and leave bassist John Hassall (who seems very articulate, by the way) to fend for himself.

Still, if anyone out there is adept at translating East Londonese, identify yourself immediately – your services are much needed.

Happy to be wrong

If you’ve been around here a few times, you’ve probably gathered that I wouldn’t exactly be a Republican voter if I lived south of the border. So what really concerned me last night, as it has in the previous debates, is that I actually find George W. Bush much easier to watch than John Kerry.

I’m inclined to view this as more of a reflection on him than me. But yet again, it appears - much to my delight – that I’m in the minority. Let’s hope so.

Ladies, Mr. O'Reilly is still on the market...

Or at least, he will be once his wife reads this.

To keep this site reasonably family-friendly, I'll avoid excerpting directly from the sort of dirty talk that makes Prince Charles look like Casanova. But if you're willing to brave the section devoted to Wild Bill's "Caribbean shower fantasies," you'll never enter the No Spin Zone (or look at a falafel) the same way again.

The real(ly big) scandal

So you’ve spent much of this year being outraged by a sponsorship scandal that may have seen $100-million of taxpayers’ money misspent, or at least being told you should be outraged by it. Fair enough. But don’t you think it might be time to reserve a bit of that righteous indignation for the fact that, yet again, the Liberals misled us on billions of dollars at budget time?

Refusing to let the long weekend go...

Caught the Concretes (who I wrote up/plugged last week in the Post, and who may or may not be ubiquitous soon) at Lee’s Palace last night, in their first-ever North American show. I wasn’t as jacked for this as I might otherwise have been, coming as it did at the tail end of a long weekend in which I’d consumed two turkey dinners, a pork roast, several beers at yesterday’s Argos game, and the open bar at a friend’s wedding. (Okay, I didn’t “consume” the entire bar. But I did my best.) Still, I think I mostly enjoyed myself.

If they really want to take off, they’ll tell singer Victoria Bergsman to lighten up a little. That whole icy cool thing kinda works, but it also kinda doesn’t when you’re playing syrupy sweet pop songs in front of an energetic eight-piece. As it was, the guitarist to her right, Maria Eriksson, stole the show.

Anyway, I’m more sold than not sold. And even though they probably would’ve figured this out regardless, I’ll take a bit of credit for letting them know it would probably be a good idea to abandon plans to keep their set to a half-hour or under. Those wacky Swedes.
